You May Have a Concussion if…
You Have Experienced Blunt Force Trauma to the Head[AW1]
Blunt force trauma occurs when you sustain a major blow due to a collision, attack, violent shaking, or other non-penetrating force. When this happens, there may be no obvious physical signs of injury such as bleeding or swelling, but there may be serious damage beneath the surface. Be watchful for signs of blunt force trauma if you have fallen, hit your head, been in a car accident, or been hurt in a sports-related accident, even if you were not hospitalized or did not require emergency care immediately thereafter.
You Experience These Symptoms
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are many distinct indicators to look out for when trying to identify a concussion. Be especially wary if you notice a combination of any of the following symptoms after your accident or injury:
- Temporary loss of consciousness
- Confusion and disorientation
- Amnesia
- Fatigue
- Being dazed
- Vomiting and nausea
- Headache
- Increased intracranial pressure
Your Symptoms Develop Over Time
Concussions don’t often come and go quickly without treatment. Be watchful of the symptoms mentioned above, especially if they persist. A concussed person may experience additional, worsened symptoms over time, such as:
- Difficulty concentrating, holding a conversation, or remembering things
- New mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, decreased emotional resilience, etc.
- Difficulty sleeping
- Personality changes
- Aggression, irritability, having a short fuse
