Do I Have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common causes of lost time at work in the U.S. It can take effect in either hand and make simple hand movements painful if not properly cared for and treated for. Once it’s determined you have carpal tunnel syndrome, pain management therapies, and other preventative measures can reduce your discomfort and stop the situation from worsening.
What Is the Carpal Tunnel?
The carpal tunnel is a passageway of ligaments and other bones where the median nerve travels through. When this nerve becomes compressed it can cause carpal tunnel syndrome and induce symptoms of numbness, pain, and tingling in the hands.
Typically, this condition will start gradually and some symptoms may even come and go, making it difficult to diagnose, especially if you decide to leave it untreated. Over time, persistent pain may lead to more severe medical complications such as complete loss of sensation and functioning in the hands.
Common Signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
As mentioned before, the more common warning signs of carpal tunnel syndrome are tingling and numbness in the fingers, hands, or wrists.
Other symptoms may include:
- Swollen fingers
- Muscles at the base of the thumb becoming smaller than usual
- Extending pain from the hand and up the arm
- Unbearable pain at night that disrupts sleeping
- Inability to hold objects as easily
