Creating a Safe & Productive Workspace

With more people working from home than ever before, creating an ergonomic workspace is essential to maintain health and productivity. Many individuals face common issues like back and wrist strain due to prolonged sitting and improper workstation setup. Fortunately, ergonomics can assist with preventing discomfort and promoting overall well-being.

Understanding Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of designing and arranging items so that people can use them safely and easily. An ergonomic workspace can reduce the risk of injuries and improve comfort by adapting your environment to fit your needs. When designing your home office, you may want to consider the following:

  • Chair and Desk Setup: Choose a chair with good lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of your spine. Adjust the chair height so your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees are level with your hips. Your desk should be at a height where your elbows are at a 90-degree angle when typing. This helps reduce strain on your shoulders and wrists. Utilize a footrest if your feet do not comfortably reach the floor, in order to maintain proper leg positioning.
  • Monitor Placement: Position your monitor at eye level, about an arm's length away. This prevents neck strain and encourages a neutral spine position. If using dual monitors, place them side by side at the same height to avoid frequent head turning. Place documents at eye level to avoid looking down, thereby reducing neck strain.
  • Keyboard and Mouse Position: Keep your keyboard directly in front of you at a height that allows your wrists to remain straight while typing. Place your mouse close to the keyboard to minimize reaching or consider using an ergonomic mouse to reduce strain.
